MANILA — The Abra Solid North Weavers will make history as the first Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) team to compete in the East Asia Super League (EASL) when the regional tournament begins its 2026-27 season.
The partnership marks the MPBL’s entry into one of Asia’s premier club competitions and gives Filipino players an opportunity to test themselves against some of the region’s strongest teams.
MPBL founder Manny Pacquiao welcomed the development, saying the EASL stint reflects the league’s objective of creating more opportunities for Filipino basketball players, particularly those coming from the regions.
Abra has quickly established itself as a force in the MPBL. After a difficult first season in 2024, the Weavers won the 2025 championship and remain in contention for another title this year.
Team owner JB Bernos said Abra is honored by the opportunity but understands the challenge of competing against more experienced EASL clubs, including former champions Chiba Jets, Hiroshima Dragonflies and Utsunomiya Brex.
Bernos said the team intends to build a competitive roster, with young Filipino players expected to be part of the club’s international campaign.
The EASL experience is also expected to provide valuable exposure for emerging local players and demonstrate that talent from the MPBL can compete on a broader Asian stage.
For Abra, the goal extends beyond the tournament itself. The Weavers hope their participation will inspire other MPBL teams to raise their level and pursue bigger opportunities in international basketball.
