MANILA —— The city government has posthumously recognized student and Boy Scout Chris Lorenz Fabian as Tacloban’s “Young Hero” for his courage during the deadly shooting at San Jose National High School (SJNHS) in June.
The recognition was formalized through City Ordinance No. 2026-16-15, which cited Fabian for his extraordinary bravery and selfless sacrifice while facing danger.
Fabian, 15, was among three students killed in the June 22 shooting that sent shockwaves through the city and drew national attention.
His mother, Erbea Fabian, accepted the honor on behalf of her son during a ceremony on Thursday.
She thanked the city government and others who have continued to remember Fabian’s actions.
“I am deeply grateful that my son’s courage has not been forgotten,” she said.
According to accounts cited in earlier recognitions of Fabian, the young scout acted quickly when the attack occurred. He reportedly moved to shut the classroom door, helping prevent the attacker from reaching other students inside.
His actions were later recognized by the Boy Scouts of the Philippines-Leyte Council, which passed a resolution commending his courage and his commitment to the Scout principles of service and sacrifice.
The new city ordinance gives formal recognition to Fabian’s heroism and seeks to preserve his memory as an example for Tacloban’s young people.
The “Tacloban Young Hero” distinction is intended to honor young residents who demonstrate exceptional courage, leadership and dedication to others.
Fabian was also previously named posthumously among the recipients of the 2026 Outstanding Eastern Visayas Awards, where he was recognized for his bravery, selflessness and concern for others.
City officials said his story will continue to serve as an inspiration to the youth and as a lasting reminder of the value of courage and service.
