MANILA — Former NBA MVP Russell Westbrook has announced his retirement from professional basketball, ending a remarkable 18-year career highlighted by records, individual honors and historic triple-double performances.
The 37-year-old guard confirmed his decision Wednesday in a post on X, accompanied by a video narrated by actor Michael B. Jordan that looked back on his career and offered a glimpse into his life beyond basketball.
Westbrook finishes his career as a nine-time NBA All-Star with averages of 20.9 points, 6.9 rebounds and 8 assists per game.
He leaves the league as its all-time leader in regular-season triple-doubles with 209. Westbrook broke Oscar Robertson’s previous record of 181 in 2021.
One of his most memorable accomplishments came during the 2016-17 season, when he became the first player since Robertson in 1961-62 to average a triple-double over an entire season. Westbrook finished that campaign with 31.6 points, 10.7 rebounds and 10.4 assists per game and was named NBA MVP.
He spent his first 11 seasons with the Oklahoma City Thunder, where he played alongside Kevin Durant and James Harden. The trio helped Oklahoma City reach the 2012 NBA Finals, where the Thunder fell to the Miami Heat.
Westbrook remains the franchise’s career leader in points, assists, rebounds and steals.
After leaving Oklahoma City, he played for the Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, Denver Nuggets and Sacramento Kings.
He concluded his career with Sacramento during the 2025-26 season.
Westbrook retires with 27,176 career points and 10,351 assists, placing him among the NBA’s all-time statistical leaders.
