I don’t want them to look at me and say, “I want to be the next Alex Eala.” I want them to look at me and say, “I want to be the first version of myself.”
— Filipino tennis sensation Alexandra Eala
MAYPAJO, Caloocan City — Filipino tennis star Alexandra ‘Alex’ Eala’s historic breakthrough on the international stage could spark a revival in Philippine sports—a Renaissance that could bring out the best of our talents and produce for us a new breed of heroes.
And today, Filipinos—young and old—are now seeing new possibilities because of Alex. In fact, her influence reaches far beyond the tennis court.
Eala’s victory in the 2026 Mubadala DC Open gave our country’s pride her first Women’s Tennis Association Tour singles title, but more than that, it has also opened the eyes of many of us—indicating possibilities in our capacity to be resilient and perseverance in winning over what appears to be seemingly insurmountable odds.
Her historic triumph should inspire us and the government must now realize that sports also plays an important role in national development. On microspect, it hints on strengthening the grassroots—not only in tennis or sports but in the overall view of the greatness of our race.
But in order to do this, we must all strive for the best, and, in sports, our athletes can only achieve top performance by the government strengthening training programs that would ensure that every talented Filipino is allowed and given the opportunity to succeed.
For a fact, we know that sports—in part—plays an important role in our society because it is also considered an effective way to keep our youth away from evil and the ills of the world such as drug addiction.
