MANILA — The Philippine National Police (PNP) has launched an investigation into a shooting at a resort in Maragondon, Cavite that killed two people and injured another, with police personnel among those involved.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. ordered authorities to establish the events that led to the early morning shooting, which took place at approximately 1:30 a.m. Wednesday in Barangay San Miguel A.
The suspected shooter, identified as a 35-year-old police corporal assigned to the Trece Martires City police, was arrested after the incident and is now being held by the local police.
Nartatez said investigators must establish the facts before any conclusions are made. He also reminded police officers that they are required to maintain discipline and exercise restraint and sound judgment even while off duty.
He said the PNP would respect due process but would take action against any personnel found to have violated the law or police regulations.
An initial investigation indicated that the four individuals had been drinking before the incident. Police said they were preparing to leave the resort when the shooting took place.
Among those involved were a civilian, a police staff sergeant assigned to the Magallanes police, and a police corporal assigned to the Ternate police.
Lt. Sarah Jane Drio, public information chief of the Cavite Provincial Police Office, said the civilian and the police staff sergeant were brought to a hospital, where they were later pronounced dead. Another police officer sustained injuries.
Investigators recovered a Glock 17 9mm handgun with a magazine from the suspect. A Beretta 9mm handgun and magazine were also retrieved from one of the victims.
Following the incident, Cavite police chief Col. Ariel Red ordered the relief of the Maragondon police chief. The officer was subsequently placed under the Cavite Police Personnel Holding and Accounting Section while authorities determine whether administrative action is warranted.
Red said the case would be investigated objectively and thoroughly, with authorities adhering to applicable laws, rules and regulations.
