MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang on Monday threw its support behind Defense Secretary Gilberto “Gibo” Teodoro Jr.’s position that government officials who favor China’s stance on issues involving the West Philippine Sea should consider stepping down from public office.
Speaking during a Palace press briefing, Press Officer Claire Castro said President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s administration sees nothing inappropriate in Teodoro’s remarks, describing them as an expression of patriotism and commitment to protecting the country’s sovereignty.
Castro stressed that government officials are expected to place the Philippines’ national interest above all else, particularly on matters concerning territorial integrity and national security.
The Palace official also took issue with the criticism leveled by Davao City First District Rep. Paolo “Pulong” Duterte against Teodoro. Duterte had accused the defense chief of promoting a loyalty test and unfairly portraying China in a negative light.
According to Castro, every Filipino’s allegiance should remain firmly with the Philippines, adding that any suggestion otherwise raises serious concerns, especially when voiced by a public official.
She further challenged individuals who share Duterte’s position on the West Philippine Sea dispute to openly express their views, saying it would allow the public to know where they stand on issues affecting the country’s sovereignty.
At the same time, Castro emphasized that the administration continues to maintain diplomatic and economic relations with China, particularly in trade, investment, and business.
However, she underscored that preserving economic ties should never come at the expense of defending the country’s sovereign rights and national interests in the West Philippine Sea.
