MANILA, Philippines — The Office of the Ombudsman has lodged criminal complaints against former congressman Edwin Gardiola over alleged irregularities involving government-funded projects during his time in public office.
Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla said the complaints, which cover violations of the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act and more than 20 counts of malversation, have been forwarded for preliminary investigation after authorities found probable grounds to pursue the cases.
The investigation allegedly uncovered records showing that Gardiola continued to hold financial interests in projects financed by the government while serving as a legislator, an act prohibited under existing anti-corruption laws.
Remulla said investigators carefully examined financial records and other documentary evidence linked to the questioned transactions before recommending the filing of criminal charges.
He added that the numerous malversation counts could carry severe penalties, including the possibility of a non-bailable offense, depending on the amount of public funds involved and the evidence ultimately presented before the court.
Aside from the criminal complaints, the Ombudsman is also pursuing Gardiola’s preventive suspension along with other legal remedies available under Philippine law while the proceedings are underway.
The filing of the complaints underscores the Ombudsman’s continuing drive to hold public officials accountable for alleged misuse of government resources.
The outcome of the preliminary investigation will determine whether the cases will be formally elevated to the Sandiganbayan for trial.
