MANILA — Police have identified two persons of interest (POIs) in the killing of American marine biologist Dr. Kent Carpenter in Negros Oriental as authorities intensify their investigation into the motive behind the fatal attack.
Negros Oriental Police Director Police Colonel Roderick Alam confirmed that two individuals are now being treated as persons of interest while investigators continue tracking down the three suspects believed to have carried out the killing.
According to Alam, detectives are working to determine why the armed suspects targeted Carpenter, who was attacked inside his residence. Investigators are examining whether the perpetrators had prior knowledge of the internationally known scientist or were familiar with his daily routine.
Members of the Special Investigation Task Group handling the case have also established that some of the suspects may have previously known Carpenter, a lead that authorities believe could help establish the motive behind the crime.
Initial findings showed that Carpenter was inside his home watching television when the assailants allegedly forced their way into the residence before fatally stabbing him. Police have yet to determine whether robbery, personal grudge, or another motive prompted the attack.
Authorities stressed that all possible angles remain under investigation as forensic evidence and witness statements continue to be evaluated.
Carpenter was internationally recognized for his pioneering work in marine biodiversity and coral reef conservation. His decades of scientific research significantly advanced global understanding of marine ecosystems and helped reinforce the Philippines’ reputation as one of the world’s richest centers of marine biodiversity.
The Philippine National Police said investigators are pursuing all available leads and coordinating with concerned agencies to ensure those responsible are identified, arrested, and prosecuted.
Police also appealed to the public to come forward with any information that could help expedite the resolution of the case as the investigation continues.
