MANILA — An American marine biologist was shot dead inside his residence in Sibulan, Negros Oriental, after three unidentified armed men reportedly forced their way into his home late Monday, authorities said.
The victim was identified by police as Kent Edward Carpenter, 53, an American citizen and noted marine biologist.
Initial investigation showed that Carpenter was inside the living room of his house in Barangay Aong watching television when the assailants entered the residence.
Police said one of the suspects immediately shot Carpenter in the head, causing his instantaneous death. The gunmen fled the scene shortly after the attack and remain at large.
Responding officers recovered evidence from the crime scene as investigators began processing the area for forensic examination.
Authorities have yet to establish a motive for the killing. Investigators are exploring all possible angles, including whether the attack was personally motivated or related to other circumstances surrounding the victim.
The Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office has launched follow-up operations and intelligence efforts to identify and arrest the suspects.
Police appealed to the public for information that could assist in the investigation, assuring that all leads will be treated with confidentiality as efforts continue to bring those responsible before the courts.
