MANILA — Filipino tennis star Alex Eala received a hero’s welcome upon her arrival in Manila on Sunday following a breakthrough performance at the Wimbledon Championships in Great Britain, where she became the first Filipino singles player to advance to the Round of 16.
Hundreds of fans gathered at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 to greet the 21-year-old athlete as she returned from London, celebrating a milestone widely viewed as a major achievement for Philippine tennis.
Representatives from the Philippine Tennis Association, Philippine Sports Commission, and Philippine Olympic Committee joined young players and supporters in welcoming Eala home.

Eala drew both local and international attention during her Wimbledon campaign after advancing through the early rounds and reaching the fourth round of the prestigious Grand Slam tournament. Her performance surpassed the best previous singles results by a Filipino player and highlighted the growing competitiveness of Philippine tennis on the world stage.
The young standout has enjoyed a strong season on the professional circuit, posting notable results that have helped elevate her standing in the global rankings and establish her among the sport’s rising talents.
Sports leaders said Eala’s achievement could catalyze increased grassroots participation and greater investment in tennis development programs across the country.
Supporters will have another chance to celebrate her success during a scheduled public appearance at the Glorietta Activity Center on Wednesday, where Eala is expected to share highlights from her Wimbledon experience and meet with fans.
Her return is particularly meaningful for local tennis followers, marking her first extended stay in the Philippines since competing in the inaugural Philippine Women’s Open earlier this year.
Eala currently holds the No. 32 spot in the official Women’s Tennis Association singles rankings and climbed to a career-high World No. 28 in the live rankings following her historic fourth-round showing at Wimbledon.
