MANILA — A landslide triggered by days of heavy rainfall claimed the lives of 10 people after burying a house in Malapatan, Sarangani on Friday, July 10, disaster officials said.
The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said the incident happened at around 10:30 a.m. in Sitio Fandaw, Barangay Poblacion, where two families were inside the house when the slope collapsed.
Rodrigo Sosmeña, OCD Region 12 director, attributed the landslide to soil saturation caused by persistent rains from the enhanced southwest monsoon, whose effects were intensified by Super Typhoon Inday.
Emergency responders retrieved all 10 victims from the wreckage.
The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office identified those killed as Alejandro Maladian, Bina Binaton Maladian, Jordan Binaton Maladian, Weljay Maladian, Bonbon Cawsri, Therd Yaton Dawang, Prince Yaton Dawang, Save Yaton Dawang, Daniel Binaton Dawang, and Ricky Ben, who died after being brought to a hospital.
Apart from the deadly landslide, several communities across Region 12 experienced flooding, particularly in Sultan Kudarat. Authorities said no additional fatalities had been reported but continued to monitor areas affected by the severe weather.
