BRUSSELS – The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) has approved the return of Russian athletes and technical officials to international volleyball events, citing updated guidance from the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The announcement came after the FIVB Board of Administration adopted a policy consistent with recommendations issued by the IOC Executive Board.
FIVB said the decision supports the principle that athletes should have access to sport regardless of nationality. As part of the reinstatement, Russian national teams will regain their place in the FIVB World Ranking with the ranking points they held prior to being frozen during the suspension period.
The federation noted that a separate decision will be made regarding the use of Russian national symbols, including the flag, anthem and colors, after consultations with international sports authorities.
FIVB and the European Volleyball Confederation (CEV) will also determine the requirements and procedures needed to facilitate the full participation of Russian athletes and officials in future competitions.
In addition, the federation said a special anti-doping testing program for Russian athletes will be created and carried out by the International Testing Agency in line with IOC recommendations.
Ukraine objected to the IOC’s decision to ease restrictions on Russian athletes, describing it as a troubling message to the international community.
The Russian Olympic Committee has remained suspended since October 2023 after integrating sports organizations from Russian-controlled areas of Ukraine.
