MANILA — A police corporal assigned to the Manila Police District (MPD) Traffic Enforcement Unit has been relieved from duty after a viral social media video allegedly showed him committing multiple traffic violations while riding a motorcycle in the city.
In a statement released Wednesday, the MPD said the officer was immediately removed from his post pending an investigation into the incident.
According to the police district, the circulating video allegedly depicts the officer driving a motorcycle with a young female back-rider who was not wearing a helmet. The video also purportedly shows the motorcycle proceeding through a red traffic signal.
“To preserve the integrity of the investigation and in accordance with established procedures, the police officer has been relieved of duty effective immediately,” the MPD said.
The agency withheld the identity of the officer, identifying him only as a police corporal assigned to the Traffic Enforcement Unit.
The MPD emphasized that the incident raises concerns over compliance with traffic regulations and the conduct expected of police personnel tasked with enforcing the law.
“The MPD takes this matter seriously, as it involves compliance with traffic laws, adherence to safety regulations, and the accountability expected of all police personnel,” the statement read.
Authorities have yet to disclose when and where the alleged violations occurred, but the video has gained traction online, drawing criticism from motorists and road safety advocates.
The relief order comes as the Philippine National Police continues to intensify efforts to ensure discipline and accountability within its ranks, particularly in cases where officers are accused of violating laws they are sworn to enforce.
The MPD said a formal investigation is underway to determine the facts surrounding the incident and any administrative or legal liabilities that may arise from the alleged violations.
