MANILA — Facing rising electricity costs and increasing pressure on the country’s energy supply, Manila Water is accelerating its transition to renewable energy while expanding energy-efficiency initiatives across its operations.
The utility company said its long-term strategy focuses on reducing dependence on conventional power sources, lowering operating expenses, and ensuring uninterrupted water services amid growing climate and energy challenges.
Central to the initiative is the Manila Water Energy Masterplan 2024–2046, which outlines the company’s roadmap for managing future energy demand, mitigating risks associated with volatile electricity prices, and improving resilience against climate-related disruptions.
Under the masterplan, Manila Water aims to reduce projected energy consumption by up to 40 percent through efficiency improvements and modern technologies.
The company also seeks to reduce carbon emissions by as much as 100,000 metric tons by 2030 as part of its commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible resource management.
Officials said the program will not only lessen the company’s environmental footprint but also improve operational stability during periods of energy shortages and supply constraints.
Manila Water reported substantial gains from energy-saving projects implemented across its regional operations over the past several years.
Among the notable achievements were reductions in electricity consumption through pipeline rehabilitation, advanced pumping technologies, river filtration systems, and other infrastructure upgrades.
Cebu Water posted savings exceeding 10 million kilowatt-hours, while Tagum Water reduced consumption by more than 9 million kilowatt-hours through energy-efficient systems.
Additional savings were recorded in Boracay and South Luzon operations through facility upgrades and solar energy integration.
The company said these measures have helped lower operational costs while reducing strain on the power grid.
As part of its renewable energy expansion, Manila Water has increased the installation of solar facilities in key operational sites nationwide.
The company currently operates 2.5 megawatt-peak (MWp) of rooftop solar capacity and is preparing to energize another 3.8 MWp across 10 facilities.
Plans are also underway for an additional 6 MWp of solar installations in 12 more sites.
Officials said renewable energy investments provide a more stable and predictable source of electricity while protecting the company from fluctuations in energy prices.
Manila Water Corporate Communications Affairs Group Head Dittie Galang said the company’s energy transformation reflects a broader commitment to sustainability and long-term service reliability.
She noted that renewable energy investments are helping the utility prepare for future operational challenges while maintaining dependable water services for consumers.
“Our shift to renewable energy is not just a business decision. It reflects a deliberate effort to operate more sustainably while preparing the company for future challenges,” Galang said.
As energy demand continues to rise nationwide, Manila Water said its strategy of combining energy conservation measures with renewable power development will help secure reliable operations while contributing to the country’s environmental and sustainability goals.
