MANILA — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has intensified its monitoring operations in the West Philippine Sea after a Chinese Coast Guard vessel was detected lingering near the western coastline of Luzon within the country’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
The PCG reported that BRP Malabrigo (MRRV-4402) has been conducting patrol missions since June 20 to monitor the activities of China Coast Guard vessel 5304, which has been observed operating in waters off Zambales and nearby provinces since June 16.
Authorities said repeated radio challenges were issued to the Chinese vessel, but no response was received.
The latest sighting came during a maritime domain awareness flight on Monday, which located the vessel approximately 45.5 nautical miles west of Iba, Zambales.
According to the PCG, the Chinese ship has maintained a pattern of movement ranging from 27 to 45 nautical miles off the coast of Luzon. Its closest recorded approach was about 27 nautical miles from Burgos, Ilocos Sur, while its southern track extended near Capones Island in Zambales.
Rear Admiral Jay Tarriela, spokesperson for the PCG on West Philippine Sea affairs, said the vessel’s movement suggests it is patrolling areas claimed by Beijing under its so-called nine-dash line.
“The vessel’s navigation pattern appears consistent with China’s attempt to enforce maritime claims that have already been declared invalid under the 2016 Arbitral Award,” Tarriela said.
Despite the continued presence of the foreign vessel, the PCG assured the public that it would sustain patrol operations and maintain a visible presence in Philippine waters.
“The Philippine Coast Guard remains committed to defending the nation’s sovereign rights and maritime jurisdiction. We will continue lawful patrols to protect our maritime domain and ensure the safety and livelihood of Filipino fishermen,” Tarriela added.
The agency also reaffirmed its commitment to exposing what it described as illegal, coercive, aggressive, and deceptive actions by Chinese maritime forces in the West Philippine Sea.
The latest development highlights the continuing maritime dispute between Manila and Beijing, with Philippine authorities maintaining vigilance against unauthorized activities within the country’s EEZ.
