MANILA — Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro Jr. said the sanctions imposed by China against him and members of his family will not affect his commitment to fulfilling his duties and defending the country’s interests.
In a statement, Teodoro said he would continue carrying out his responsibilities and speaking out against what he described as China’s actions in Philippine waters and on the international stage.
The Defense chief said he respects China’s decision to impose the sanctions, acknowledging that it is within Beijing’s prerogative. However, he criticized the move, saying it reflects how China treats individuals who speak the truth about what he called its deceptive actions.
Teodoro added that many of China’s own citizens, as well as people living in territories under its control, experience far more severe restrictions than those imposed on him and his family.
China earlier announced that Teodoro and his immediate family members are barred from entering mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau. They are also prohibited from engaging in business transactions with Chinese entities, citing what Beijing described as the Defense Secretary’s “irresponsible remarks” against China.
Despite the sanctions, Teodoro maintained that he remains focused on protecting Philippine sovereignty and advancing the country’s interests.
