MANILA — Vice President Sara Duterte has publicly denied any interest in unseating President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., saying her duty is anchored in defending the Constitution rather than pursuing a political takeover.
During Independence Day ceremonies in Davao City, Duterte said she has no involvement in any move that would remove the current administration through non-constitutional means, adding that she has no desire to assume the presidency.
She emphasized that her role as vice president is clearly defined under the Constitution, which also includes a responsibility to uphold the rule of law.
However, Duterte also delivered pointed remarks about the current political climate, expressing criticism of Marcos’ leadership and urging the public to remain aware of issues she believes affect governance.
In her speech, she underscored corruption as a broader societal problem, saying it not only involves financial misconduct but also undermines trust, opportunity, and freedom.
The vice president’s remarks come amid heightened political friction between the former allies, who previously ran together under the “UniTeam” coalition during the 2022 elections.
At the same time, Duterte is facing impeachment proceedings in the House of Representatives over allegations including misuse of confidential funds, bribery, unexplained wealth, and other accusations tied to her public statements.
The Senate is set to hold a pre-trial conference on June 18, with the formal impeachment trial expected to begin on July 6.
