MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Commission on Women has called for broader action to combat cervical cancer, warning that many Filipinas still face serious risks due to limited healthcare access and lack of awareness.
As Cervical Cancer Consciousness Month is observed this May, the agency highlighted the urgent need for stronger prevention and treatment programs nationwide.
PCW Chairperson Ermelita Valdeavilla said cervical cancer should no longer continue claiming lives since it can be prevented and successfully treated when detected early.
She urged both public and private institutions to work together in making HPV vaccines, screening services, medical information, and treatment more accessible to women and young girls across the country.
Valdeavilla noted that several underserved communities continue to struggle with inadequate healthcare resources and limited preventive care programs.
The commission stressed that awareness campaigns must be backed by affordable healthcare services, stronger medical infrastructure, and long-term government support for women’s health.
Meanwhile, health advocates continue pushing for expanded vaccination initiatives and earlier diagnosis efforts to reduce cervical cancer cases worldwide.
