Gumaca — A retired military helicopter has found a new mission — attracting tourists.
The municipal government of Gumaca officially unveiled a decommissioned Bell UH-1H Iroquois or “Huey” helicopter as the newest attraction at Greenbelt Park.
The aircraft, carrying tail number Huey 292, was formally turned over by the Philippine Air Force through Major Gen. Dennis Estrella, a native of the town.
Mayor Webster Letargo said the helicopter symbolizes heroism, sacrifice, and dedication of Filipino airmen who once used the aircraft in combat support, rescue missions, troop transport, and disaster response operations across the country.
“This is more than just a display piece,” Letargo said. “It represents the bravery of the pilots and crew who served the nation.”
The Huey helicopter was among the first modern aircraft delivered to the Philippines in 1969 and became one of the most recognizable workhorses of the military for decades.
Town officials hope the attraction will not only boost tourism but also educate younger generations about the role of the Armed Forces in national security and humanitarian missions.
The retired aircraft was transported to Gumaca aboard a trailer truck before being installed at the park.
