
MANILA, Philippines — A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck near San Julian in Eastern Samar on Monday afternoon, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.
The quake, classified as tectonic, occurred at 2:09 p.m. Its epicenter was traced 9 kilometers northwest of the municipality, with a shallow depth of 10 kilometers.
Shaking of Intensity V was experienced in Can-Avid, Eastern Samar, as well as in Dulag and Alangalang in Leyte and Gandara in Samar.
Intensity IV was recorded in several parts of Leyte, including Abuyog, Palo, and Carigara.
Lower intensities were logged in other areas across the Visayas and parts of Luzon and Mindanao. Intensity III affected locations in Biliran, Eastern Samar, Leyte, Sorsogon, and Southern Leyte, while even lighter tremors were felt in parts of Cebu, Masbate, Albay, Iloilo, and Davao Occidental.
Authorities cautioned residents to remain alert as aftershocks may follow and minor structural damage cannot be ruled out.
