CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Camiguin is gearing up for a major sporting milestone as it hosts 306 triathletes from 15 countries in its first Ironman 5150 Triathlon on Sunday, May 3.
To ensure the safety and smooth flow of the event, provincial authorities will enforce a full road closure along the Camiguin Circumferential Road. The closure will cover the route from Barangay Tangaro in Catarman to Barangay Anito in Mambajao, running from 3 a.m. until 1 p.m.
The race will open with a 1.5-kilometer swim set against the iconic backdrop of the Sunken Cemetery. Athletes will then shift to a 40-kilometer bike course along the island’s scenic circumferential highway before finishing with a 10-kilometer run that ends at the Sports Complex.
Officials stressed that strict traffic rules will be in place throughout the race period, including a ban on road crossing, entry, and parking in designated areas. Emergency responders will be allowed priority passage when necessary.
Camiguin Provincial Tourism Officer Candice Borromeo said police and other security personnel had already been briefed at Camp General Bonifacio Aranas in Mambajao as part of preparations.
The Department of Tourism-Northern Mindanao (DOT-10) highlighted the broader impact of hosting international events, saying these help elevate the region’s tourism standing.
According to DOT-10 Director Marie Elaine Unchuan, such events strengthen Northern Mindanao’s position in sports tourism while generating economic activity and global visibility.
Local tourism officials also noted that accommodations in the province have been fully booked ahead of the race.
Authorities are urging residents and visitors to cooperate with traffic and security measures to ensure the successful staging of the event.
