MANILA — Former broadcaster Jay Sonza is now under the custody of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) following his arrest on Thursday evening, April 30, in Quezon City.
Authorities served a warrant against Sonza in connection with a cyber libel complaint and an alleged violation of Article 154 of the Revised Penal Code, which involves the publication of false information. The charges stem from claims that he circulated misleading reports regarding the health of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
In a post on social media, Sonza’s lawyer, Atty. Mark Tolentino shared a copy of the arrest warrant, indicating that the “unlawful publication” charge was marked as non-bailable. Tolentino, however, argued that this classification is incorrect, maintaining that the offense should allow for bail.
NBI Director Atty. Melvin Matibag said the agency intends to seek clarification from the courts regarding the matter. In an interview on Friday, May 1, he explained that warrants typically specify whether bail is recommended or not, and the wording in this case has raised questions even within the NBI.

Matibag said Sonza will be presented before the Pasay Regional Trial Court on Monday, where the issue is expected to be addressed. He added that the agency may also coordinate with the Supreme Court to resolve any ambiguity in the warrant.
Sonza will remain in NBI custody over the weekend, as the arrest took place after court hours and coincided with a holiday and non-working days.
The NBI chief assured the public that Sonza’s rights are being respected. He noted that the former broadcaster, who reportedly has difficulty walking and suffers from asthma, has been provided with a wheelchair and medical assistance.
Matibag also confirmed that Sonza is allowed to receive visits from his legal counsel and family members while in detention.
