MANILA, Philippines — A House ethics case against Cavite Rep. Francisco “Kiko” Barzaga is intensifying, with expulsion now being considered.
Deputy Speaker Janette Garin said the young lawmaker’s repeated offenses—including social media posts criticized as offensive and allegations against colleagues—justify stronger sanctions beyond suspension. Barzaga has already served two 60-day suspensions.
Despite the penalties, Barzaga has maintained his stance, doubling down on his criticisms of the House. He has also drawn attention for his unconventional public persona and behavior during sessions, which some lawmakers consider disruptive.
Garin said Congress typically imposes stricter punishment for repeat violations, with expulsion as the final step. She also raised concerns about Barzaga’s absence from ethics proceedings.
Sources indicated the ethics committee may have endorsed his removal, though the recommendation still awaits approval from House leadership. Officials declined to disclose details, citing confidentiality of the process.
