MANILA, Philippines—It was a short stay in Madrid for Alex Eala, who wrapped up her WTA 1000 Madrid Open campaign on Saturday after back-to-back exits in singles and doubles.
In doubles, Eala and partner Zeynep Sönmez were stopped in the round of 16 by the experienced duo of Taylor Townsend and Kateřina Siniaková, losing 6-1, 7-5.
Her singles journey ended earlier in the week after a straight-sets loss to Belgium’s Elise Mertens, 6-2, 6-1, in the opening rounds.
Despite the early exits, Eala remained upbeat, posting on social media that she was grateful for her time in Madrid and determined to come back stronger.
The results continue a difficult run on clay for the rising Filipino star, but she will have little time to rest.
Next up is the Catalonia Open, a WTA 125 event in Spain, where she hopes to regain momentum and sharpen her form ahead of the rest of the season.
