
MANILA – Elisha Kleon Baquial delivered when it mattered most, powering Far Eastern University-Diliman to its maiden boys’ taekwondo title in the UAAP Season 88 tournament held Friday at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
The Baby Tamaraw standout outdueled University of Santo Tomas’ Jin Raphael Gaupo in a tightly contested +70kg final, winning 2-1 (3–4, 9–1, 10–1) to clinch the overall crown for FEU-D.
The triumph marked FEU-Diliman’s fourth championship across disciplines, adding to its titles in U19 basketball, football, and blitz chess.
Coach Paul Romero said the victory was deeply meaningful, highlighting the dedication and sacrifices made by both players and coaching staff throughout their preparation.
Heading into the final bout, FEU-Diliman and UST were tied with two gold medals each. UST’s wins came from Khadryck Costina and Akira Malonzo, while FEU-D’s earlier golds were delivered by Josh Pinatacan and Jayar Cruza.
Romero noted that he urged his athletes to remain composed and simply give their best, emphasizing that the competition marked a culmination of their efforts.
FEU-Diliman also secured three bronze medals, while UST concluded its campaign with two golds, two silvers, and one bronze. National University Nazareth School finished third overall with two silvers and three bronzes.
On the girls’ side, National University’s Lady Bullpups dominated the inaugural division, sweeping all four gold medals at stake.
