MANILA – University of the Philippines tennis player Lance Jacob Fernandez booked a spot in the quarterfinals of the Philta Men’s Open after a convincing 6-2, 6-4 win over fourth seed Vicente Elberto Anasta on Thursday at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
The 13th-seeded Fernandez once again proved too strong for Anasta, whom he also defeated in a previous encounter at the 2025 PCA Men’s Open.
After the match, Fernandez said his steady serve and aggressive forehand made the difference.
“I felt good on court. My serve was solid and my forehand was clicking,” said the 20-year-old student-athlete.
He also praised his opponent, describing Anasta as a difficult and experienced competitor on the local tennis tour.
Fernandez will next face No. 8 seed Ronard Joven, who eliminated Noel Damian Jr., 6-2, 6-4, to secure his quarterfinal berth.
Despite the tough matchup ahead, Fernandez remained optimistic.
“I respect him a lot. I’ll just go out there, compete, and do my best,” he said.
Fernandez also had success in doubles, teaming up with his elder brother Loucas to defeat Russeiden Sardea and Marraphael Teng, 6-1, 6-3.
In other matches, Francis Alcantara delivered one of the biggest upsets of the round by defeating third seed John Benedict Aguilar, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, to move into the next stage of the tournament.
Top seed Alberto Lim Jr., along with Eric “Jed” Olivarez Jr. and Arthur Pantino, also advanced with strong performances in the prestigious event backed by Tecnifibre and the Philippine Sports Commission.
