MANILA — Ateneo ended University of the East’s campaign in disappointing fashion after securing a straight-sets victory in their UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball clash on Saturday at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion.
The Blue Eagles dominated the Lady Warriors, 25-23, 25-19, 29-27, to complete a season sweep and hand UE its second consecutive winless campaign.
With the loss, UE remains Ateneo’s only victim this season and extends its losing streak to 28 straight matches across two years.
Rookie Ana Hermosura led Ateneo with an impressive all-around performance of 11 points, 11 digs, and nine receptions, while Jihan Chuatico anchored the net with five blocks to finish with 12 points. J.Lo Delos Santos added seven points, including a key service ace that sealed the win.
Setter KC Cortez stepped up in the absence of senior leader Taks Fujimoto, producing 22 excellent sets along with four points.
Head coach Sergio Veloso praised his team’s fighting spirit, emphasizing consistency regardless of match conditions.
UE showed fight behind Khy Cepada and Van Bangayan, who combined for 30 points, but the Lady Warriors fell short in crucial stretches, especially in the tight third set where they had multiple set points but could not close it out.
Ateneo now looks to finish its season strong after back-to-back wins over UE.
