MANILA — Four areas in the country are expected to experience “danger” level heat index conditions, according to the state weather bureau PAGASA.
In its latest forecast, PAGASA said that Catarman in Northern Samar, Zamboanga City, Cotabato City, and Dumangas in Iloilo may register a heat index of around 42°C.
A heat index between 42°C and 51°C is classified as “danger,” where prolonged outdoor exposure can lead to heat exhaustion or even heat stroke.
Authorities are advising the public to reduce time spent under the sun, avoid strenuous activities during peak heat hours, and maintain proper hydration. Wearing light clothing and taking breaks in shaded or cool areas are also strongly recommended to prevent heat-related illnesses.
Tropical cyclone
Meanwhile, PAGASA is also monitoring a tropical cyclone outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).
The weather agency said Tropical Storm Sinlaku was located about 2,730 kilometers east of northeastern Mindanao and is currently nearly stationary. It carries maximum sustained winds of 85 km/h near the center and gusts reaching up to 105 km/h.
If it enters PAR, it will be locally named “Caloy”, becoming the third tropical cyclone to enter the country this year.
PAGASA added that the storm may enter PAR by late next week and is forecast to recurve between April 16 and 22, likely staying far from land and posing no direct threat to the country.
