MANILA — Rising Filipina tennis star Alex Eala slipped to No. 45 in the updated Women’s Tennis Association rankings after the conclusion of the Miami Open.
From a career-best No. 29, Eala dropped 16 places as she lost crucial ranking points from her semifinal finish in last year’s edition of the tournament, in line with the WTA’s rolling 52-week system.
Still, the 20-year-old showed promise with a Round of 16 finish this year. She scored victories over Laura Siegemund and Magda Linette before falling to Karolina Muchova.
Eala will now transition to the clay season, opening her campaign in Austria before heading to Stuttgart, Germany, where she is set to compete in the qualifiers.
These tournaments are part of her buildup to the Madrid Open, one of the premier events on the WTA tour.
