MANILA – Senator Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito on Wednesday backed proposals for voluntary salary cuts among government officials to help finance fuel subsidies and financial assistance programs amid the ongoing oil price surge.
Ejercito said reducing salaries and allowances could generate additional funds to support sectors struggling with rising fuel costs while also demonstrating government restraint during a crisis.
During the Kapihan sa Senado forum, the senator said the proposal reflects a willingness among public officials to share the sacrifices faced by ordinary citizens.
“That’s a noble offer. If necessary, trimming salaries and allowances could contribute to helping vulnerable sectors. Those funds could even be donated to support them,” Ejercito said.
He noted that such a measure does not need to be mandatory and could instead be implemented voluntarily, particularly if government leaders initiate austerity efforts.
According to Ejercito, if Senate leadership decides to temporarily reduce allowances, it could set a strong example of responsible governance.
For his part, Tingog Party-list Rep. Jude Acidre said lawmakers are receptive to the proposal, pointing out that Congress has previously adopted similar measures during times of crisis.
Acidre said compensation reductions among legislators could help strengthen the government’s ability to provide fuel subsidies and cash aid while global oil prices remain volatile due to tensions in the Middle East.
Authorities continue to roll out assistance programs to help workers and drivers affected by increasing fuel costs.
