MANILA – A newly enacted law will prevent public school teachers from retiring in entry-level positions, with Sherwin Gatchalian emphasizing expanded career opportunities in the education sector.
The development comes as the Department of Education prepares to promote approximately 100,000 teachers and school heads nationwide this year.
Gatchalian said the initiative is anchored on Republic Act 12288, which establishes a structured career progression system for public school teachers and school leaders.
The law introduces additional teaching and administrative positions such as Teacher IV to VII, Master Teacher V and VI, and School Principal V, allowing educators to move up the ranks more efficiently.
“Ngayong mas marami nang oportunidad para sa pag-angat ng karera ng ating mga guro, mas matutulungan natin silang umunlad at magtagumpay sa kanilang propesyon,” he said.
He added that strengthening teacher welfare remains crucial, given their key role in educating the youth.
The measure also requires the DepEd to craft transparent and merit-based promotion guidelines to ensure fairness in career advancement.
Gatchalian, who sponsored and co-authored the law, said the system is expected to promote long-term growth and stability within the teaching profession.
