MANILA – The Philippine women’s football team faces a daunting challenge as they go up against two-time champions Japan in the quarterfinals of the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup in Australia.
The Filipinas, who arrived in Sydney on Friday, are set to face the Nadeshiko squad at 11 a.m. Sunday (Philippine time) at Stadium Australia.
Japan dominated Group C, finishing with 17 goals, including an 11-0 thrashing of India, while the Philippines ended Group A with a 1-0-2 record. The Filipinas advanced to the knockout stage as one of the best third-place teams, edging their rivals on tiebreakers.
Philippine coach Mark Torcaso, an Australian, expressed enthusiasm ahead of the clash: “It’s an honor to compete against some of the best teams in Asia and the world. The girls are excited for this match, just like we were against Australia and South Korea.”
The winner of this encounter will secure a spot in the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, marking a potential second straight appearance for the Filipinas following their historic 2023 debut. The losing side will still have a chance through a play-in round.
Japan coach Nils Nielsen highlighted his team’s preparation: “We need to ensure we defend well, not just focus on attack. We’ll work on transitions and solidifying our defense in the coming days.”
Meanwhile, Australia booked their semifinal spot with a 2-1 victory over North Korea, while China, Chinese Taipei, South Korea, and Uzbekistan continue to fight for the remaining slots.
The Philippine lineup features World Cup veterans Chandler McDaniel, Hali Long, Olivia McDaniel, midfielders Sara Eggesvik and Jaclyn Sawicki, defenders Angela Beard, Jessika Cowart, Sofia Harrison, and rising stars Ariana Markey, Alexa Pino, Jael Marie Guy, Mallie Ramirez, Paige McSwigan, and Isabella Pasion.
