ZAMBOANGA CITY – Philippine Army troops recovered a total of 295 grenades from a hidden stash linked to the Dawlah Islamiya-Maute Group (DI-MG) in the remote barangays of Lanao del Sur, the military announced Thursday.
According to Maj. Gen. Yegor Rey Barroquillo Jr., commander of the 1st Infantry Division, soldiers from the 55th Infantry Battalion (55IB) discovered the weapons on Wednesday in Barangay Piagolongan, Marogong.
“The sheer number of grenades found in this single cache is a serious blow to the terrorist group’s capabilities in the region,” Barroquillo said.
He noted that removing these explosives prevents potential attacks and safeguards the surrounding communities.
The general credited local residents for their crucial role in reporting suspicious activity, which led to the successful seizure.
“This incident reflects a shift among Lanao del Sur communities, favoring safety and peace over supporting violent elements,” he added.
Barroquillo expressed gratitude to both the military personnel and residents, underscoring that successful operations rely on trust and cooperation between civilians and security forces.
He concluded by emphasizing the army’s ongoing mission to dismantle terrorist networks, recover illegal arms, and ensure long-term security in Western Mindanao.
