MANILA — Senator Jinggoy Estrada came under fire online for remarks directed at Gilas Pilipinas Women’s hopeful Elizabeth Jeanette Means during a recent Senate hearing.
During the Committee on Justice and Human Rights meeting on Tuesday, Estrada asked Means if she had a Filipino boyfriend. Means replied courteously, “Not yet po.” Estrada then quipped, “Maybe Senator Pangilinan might want to apply… Sorry, kay Sharon,” alluding to Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan and his marriage to iconic actress Sharon Cuneta.
Pangilinan jokingly cautioned Estrada that Cuneta might be upset with the comment. The conversation occurred in the context of Means’ naturalization hearing.
The exchange sparked swift reactions online, with many criticizing Estrada’s comments as unprofessional and inappropriate.
