BICUTAN, Taguig City — The ongoing energy crisis has prompted the Department of Science and Technology (DoST) to take steps to reduce the country’s reliance on imported fuel and to promote locally developed electric vehicle (EV) technologies.
The initiative, led by Science and Technology Secretary Renato Solidum Jr., aims not only to mitigate the impact of rising global fuel prices but also to promote alternative energy sources such as batteries instead of fossil fuels.
Solidum noted that the department is exploring new technologies through the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD), which will support homegrown e-mobility solutions as cost-effective and environmentally sustainable alternatives to traditional transport.
“Our investments in local EV research are paying off,” he said, adding, “With the continuing rise of global fuel prices, these technologies offer a practical way for Filipinos to save on costs while contributing to cleaner communities.”
As an example, Solidum cited the MB Dalaray electric ferry, which operates along the Pasig River using an electric propulsion system that reduces operating costs, noise, and emissions. The ferry provides regular service between Guadalupe and Escolta, carrying up to 50 passengers.
Other notable projects include the C-Trike, which consumes 4.5 kilowatt-hours for a 56.4-kilometer range, and the e-trike, already deployed in areas such as Cauayan City, Tuguegarao City, Batanes, Iloilo, and Metro Manila.
Meanwhile, the Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines (EVAP) announced the development of an electric jeepney to replace aging fleets, and a hybrid electric train is also undergoing testing with the Philippine National Railways (PNR).
Expressing confidence in the potential of locally developed EV technologies to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable development, Solidum said DoST is working with local government units (LGUs) to encourage EV adoption and provide incentives for owners.
